Salary Transfer Letter in the UAE: Format and How to Ask HR for One
A salary transfer letter is your employer’s letter to your bank, confirming that your salary will be paid into your account there. UAE banks ask for one when you apply for a personal loan, and some will only lend once your salary is transferred to them. Banks elsewhere in the Gulf ask for the same letter — in Bahrain it may be called a letter of undertaking for salary transfer. Two letters are involved, and this page has both: the transfer letter itself, as HR issues it, and the request you send HR to ask for one.

- Printed on company letterhead, with a reference number and the issue date near the top
- Addressed to the bank by name — and on the bank’s own form if it has one, since some banks set the format themselves
- The employee’s full name, job title, joining date and salary
- The account the salary will be paid into, exactly as the bank gave it
- Any undertaking the bank asks for, such as also paying end-of-service benefits to the account — and only what it asks for
- Signed by an authorised signatory and stamped
What to include
- Your full name, job title and employee number
- The bank’s name, and the branch if the bank asked for one
- Why you need it: a personal loan, or moving your salary to a new account
- Your account number or IBAN, exactly as the bank gave it
- The bank’s own form, attached, if it has one
- The month from which you want your salary paid into the new account
Which salary transfer letter do you need?
- For a personal loan or finance
- The bank asks for it as part of your loan application, and some UAE banks will only lend once your salary is paid into an account with them. Ask whether the bank has its own form, and whether it wants your end-of-service benefits covered too — some do — then put both in your request.
- For moving your salary to a new account
- No loan involved: you have opened an account at a new bank and want your salary paid there. The letter confirms the new account to the bank, and your request asks HR or payroll to update your payment details from a given month.
- On the bank’s own form
- Some banks give you a form for your employer to fill in, sign and stamp instead of a free-form letter — Commercial Bank of Qatar, for example, asks for its salary transfer letter “with format”. If yours does, attach the form to your request so HR completes the right document the first time.
What happens next
- 1HR or payroll checks your details and prepares the letter, or completes the bank’s form.
- 2The letter reaches the bank either straight from HR or through you — ask HR which.
- 3Check that the account number or IBAN on the letter matches the bank’s records exactly.
- 4From the agreed month, check that your first salary arrives in the new account.
- 5Keep a copy, and talk to HR before you move your salary again — the letter was written to this bank.
